Monday, Oct 27 Provincial By-Elections
To all AHEA members, particularly those in ridings with a by-election this coming Monday:
As always when there is a possibility of political change, we ask all of our members to pray that God's will be done in the electing of MLAs who are open to the rights of parents in education. And, as always, we ask all of our members in those ridings to please get out and vote.
Although AHEA is not a political organization (we do not advocate for any particular political party), there is one by-election in particular that is of great interest to home educators, and that is the by-election in Calgary-Elbow.
Here are the candidates and parties running in that by-election…
Greg Clark – Alberta Party
Gordon Dirks – Progressive Conservative
John Fletcher – Wild Rose
Stephanie McLean – New Democrat
Susan Wright – Liberal
Since the possibility exists that, should Gordon Dirks win this by-election, he will become Alberta's new Education Minister, AHEA interviewed Mr. Dirks to get his thoughts on issues important to home educators.
- Mr. Dirks has stated his strong belief in parental choice and options.
- Mr. Dirks agrees that Section 32 of the Education Act on parental rights is an important component.
- Mr. Dirks believes in a parent's right to home educate.
- Mr. Dirks has stated that government exists to serve its citizens.
Here are links that AHEA members can use to get more biographical information on each of the candidates:
We also ask all Alberta home educators to pray, not only for the outcome of these by-elections, but for the future of home education in this province and that God's will maybe done.
