Important Questions to Ask When Looking for a Home School Supervising Agency

  1. Are all your facilitators home educators? If not, what qualifications do your facilitators have that give them a good understanding of home education for Grades 1 through 12?
  2. What approaches of home education do your facilitators support and oversee?
  3. Will your facilitators be able to provide us with advice and suggest-ed resources in the various subject areas?
  4. What can we expect during the two visits with the facilitator that are required in the Alberta Home Education Regulation?
  5. Are home visits with our facilitator compulsory or are there other places where we could meet?
  6. What are the expectations of the facilitator at these meetings? What do they expect to see in a home education program and portfolio?
  7. What is your perspective regarding the role of the school board or private school in evaluating a student’s progress (e.g., testing, as-sessments)? Will my children have to write the Alberta Student Learning Assessments or Provincial Achievement Tests? What hap-pens if they don’t?
  8. What is your perspective on report cards for home educated students? Are they necessary? If so, who prepares them: the parent or the facilitator?
  9. Are your facilitators able to recognize special needs in students and suggest resources and methods to assist parents in teaching such students?
  10. What is my recourse if, during the year, my facilitator and I don’t agree?

If you are uncomfortable with the answers, shop around.

It is important that you know you have specific rights within the Alberta Regulations on Home Education, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and precedence set by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Description: WISDOM was established in 1995, and was founded for home schoolers, by home schoolers. Our facilitators and support staff are all home educating parents and/or homeschooled graduates, and wholly committed to this method of education. WISDOM offers traditional, parent delivered home education, and fully supports parents as you choose the methods and resources that work best for your unique children. Some optional extras for your family include: a classical online program, parent training in mediated learning, Dynamic Assessment, family camps, workshops, an annual high school conference and much more. We help families navigate the many paths through high school, and support families in whichever direction you go, whether that is a WISDOM diploma, a parent-verified transcript, the Alberta High School Diploma or another option. Our bi-monthly magazine and monthly e-newsletters keep you informed. Our Parent Advisory Council works hard to advocate for the right of families to choose the home school lifestyle.

Address: 201, 2 Athabascan Ave, Sherwood Park, Alberta T8A 4E3

Description: THEE (Traditional Home Education Experts)

We offer a home education program which emphasizes the traditional approach to home education where the parent is in full control of the learning program at home. We fully support the parents’ right and responsibility to establish the form and function of the home education program, whether that be through a structured approach or an unschooling approach or anything in between. Our facilitators are veteran home educators who are your personal consultants and who can ask the right questions; they will not try to prescribe nor pressure any learning resource or method onto the parent’s plan. We do not offer a Blended program, nor do we try to buy your patronage by offering additional funding amounts through questionable programming that has a creative name such as “Aligned”, “Fully Aligned”, or “Teacher Directed Home Education”.

THEE facilitators conduct the two required evaluations for each home educating child, and these evaluations may occur in the home (if the parent permits it) or at a nearby restaurant or coffee shop. The facilitator will be evaluating the child for “progress and achievement” relative to the parent’s authored Program Plan. These evaluations are hopefully a “No Stress” event that soon turn into a fun “Show and Tell” opportunity for the home ed child to show off what he/she has accomplished to an adult other than mom and dad! Description: 40-Mile Home Education is the home education division of Cherry Coulee Christian Academy (CCCA) in Bow Island. Craig and Gwynne Funston have been the principal supervisors for CCCA for the past fifteen years, now entering their sixteenth year. They are veteran home educators, having homeschooled all nine of their children (and down to their last two), and now seeing their grandchildren being homeschooled.

They are committed to the model whereby the parents are the teachers, either through the parent-directed or or parent-delivered model. They make every visit as a husband and wife team; and thereby come into the home to assist and advise (only when called upon by the parents to do so). Supporting the family in their call to home education is their chief mandate.
